In March 2004 Colleen McDonald and John Lindstrom took over operation of Cobb Meadows (formerly Hoberg’s) Golf Club. Since then, they have worked tirelessly to modernize and improve the facilities while continuing the storied traditions of this mountain vacationland.

Colleen and John brought along some traditions of their own, too … all the way from Chicago, where Colleen’s grandfather Pat McDonald started the first Rob Roy Golf Club in 1944. As World War II was winding down, Pat and his wife, along with their five children, began a labor of love and determination, reopening and bringing to success a golf course that had been abandoned.

John began work at Rob Roy driving range when he was nine years old, and it was there that he first met Colleen.

Over the next forty plus years the family ran the original Rob Roy and two other golf clubs- Chapel Hill and Crystal Woods- also located in the Chicago suburbs.

The pair first saw Cobb Meadows in November 2003 on a drive over Cobb Mountain with John’s mother, Betty, and Colleen’s father, Mike. The rest as they say is, “history”.

Since their acquisition, Rob Roy has hosted many events which John and Colleen hope will become new traditions … including the annual Blues & Jazz Festival; Concert in the Pines; the Cobb Mountain Art Fair; the Boo Bash Halloween Festival, and the springtime Rob Roy Derby.

Golf offerings include Men’s and Women’s Clubs, a summertime Friday Night Twilight League, and Men’s Tuesday Night League.

The Creekside Grill offers “Lake County’s Best Sunday Brunch.” And, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights you’ll delight in something from the regular dinner menu or in one of Chef Isreal’s sumptuous weekly additions.

Often, visitors take the time to share their memories of Cobb Mountain – the ole resorts, the golf course, the restaurant and the bar. Old photographs have turned up, and John and Colleen have restored and framed them and hang them proudly throughout the clubhouse.
